The Loss of the "TITANIC", 20 April 1912
Abstract
Four pages from the April 20, 1912 issue of Harper's Weekly, dedicated to "The Loss of the 'TITANIC.'" This was printed five days after the ship went down, but before infromation had been received from the CARPATHIA which was bringing passengers back to New York. The captain of the CARPATHIA had ordered people aboard not to send information to journalists, so there was much that was not yet known. For example, the third page has portraits of four of the most prominent men aboard, John Jacob Astor, Archibald Butt, William T. Stead and Isidor Straus, but the text at the bottom says that, as of press time, these men are believed to have died. There is also a reference to the CARPATHIA being expected on Friday, but it actually arrived late on Thursday, April 18. While it is an incomplete story of what happened, this newspaper story has incredible visuals, including a large-scale photograph of the ship's funnels, a map showing the approximate location where it sank, and a view of the ship's luxurious dining room.
