Established in 1905 on Oxford Street in London as a way to increase subscriptions to the Times of London, the Times Book Club was both a lending library, free for subscribers, and a bookstore where subscribers received discounts on new books. As the clipping explains, the Times contracted with the steamship companies to provide lending libraries on the transatlantic steamers for passengers. This clipping reveals that on Cunard ships, this perk was available to both first and second class passengers on Cunard ships but on White Star Line ships it was only for first class passengers. The back of this clipping includes an interesting historical footnote-- an announcement for a student concert by Harriet Cohen, age 16 at the time, a talented prodigy who later became a very famous pianist.
