Autograph of TITANIC survivors Archibald Gracie and Eva Hart, 1912

 Item
Identifier: 2020.39.7344

Abstract

A photograph of the TITANIC, signed by survivors Colonel Archibald Gracie and Eva Hart. Gracie survived the disaster, but his health never recovered from his injuries and hypothermia, and he died on December 4, 1912, just about 8 months after the sinking, so this was signed in the same year as the disaster. Eva Hart, however, was a child survivor, just 7 years old at the time, so her signature on this page was added later, likely decades later. The page is actually the first page of one of the earliest books about the disaster The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters by Logan Marshall, which was rushed into print in 1912 and is generally considered inaccurate and sensationalized. The photograph is labeled TITANIC, but is actually a photograph of TITANIC's sister ship, OLYMPIC. On the back of this page is a photograph of Captain Edward J. Smith. The page has been badly damaged by fire.
