Abstract

Booklet titled "Continuous Certificate of Discharge" for William Nutbean, who was a crew member on the TITANIC. This booklet was issued by the British Board of Trade that governed merchant marine ships. The first page notes that this is a "Renewal book/ Original lost through shipwreck." It provides Nutbean's personal information and a physical description. The next pages records his voyages in 1911 as a fireman (a stoker) on OCEANIC, OLYMPIC and PARANA. Voyage no. 6 is the TITANIC voyage, from April 10 to April 15, 1912. Under "destination" it says "Vessel lost. For "place of discharge," it gives coordinates for the sinking-- the crew members of the TITANIC lost their jobs and their salaries when the ship went down. In September 1912, he was back at sea, with voyages on the OLYMPIC and on ships sailing to Africa. The last page has his photograph. Nutbean had a childhood of poverty and violence, and he had a long criminal record before signing up for the TITANIC, but his career at sea continued for many years after the disaster. He was also awarded a medal for his service during World War I.
