Abstract

Saloon passenger list for the CAMPANIA's August 29, 1896 voyage from Liverpool to New York. The front cover has a record of the voyage that has been filled out by a passenger, and the map of the route on the back also has notations of the ship's location on different dates. This is a very large first class passenger list, and it was reported at the time that the ship was full. Among the interesting people aboard was Dr. Anna Craig, a New York woman who, after teaching school for 12 years, went to medical school and then practiced medicine for the rest of her life. Mr. T. Asai is probably the same T. Asai who, by the end of September, was in San Francisco on his way back to Japan after having bought multiple American and British locomotives and other machinery for a Japanese railway. Sir Edward Reed was a British naval architect, politician and railroad magnate. Dr. Thomas Fiaschi was an Australian-Italian surgeon who was on his way home after traveling to Ethiopia to provide medical service during the Italo-Ethiopian War. And Charles E. Rushmore is the New York lawyer for whom Mount Rushmore was named.
