Abstract

A booklet titled "Men and Ships" from Cunard White Star, dated April 30, 1936. On the cover is a drawing of two men on deck next to a lifesaver with the name QUEEN MARY, and there are several references in the text to that "new" superliner. This booklet was probably issued in association with the new ship's May 1936 maiden voyage. The booklet focuses, however, on the crew, starting with the first page titled "Man Power... It's Men that Count." There are photographs of a number of Cunard captains and officers, captioned with their names, and there are also anonymous photographs of seamen working with ropes and lamps and tools, and of stewards and dining room staff. The focus is on "men," but stewardesses are also mentioned and there is one photograph of a stewardess, the only women working aboard ship at this time but a crucial part of ship life. There is also an emphasis on British tradition and British character, including a reference to service and seamanship as British "racial" ideals. Printed by Unz & Co.
