Cunard White Star First Class, January 1949
Abstract
January 1949 booklet about Cunard White Star's First Class accommodations. The booklet was issued in relationship to the maiden voyage of the CARONIA in January 1949, and the text also focuses on six other ships-- the BRITANNIC, MAURETANIA, MEDIA, PARTHIA, QUEEN MARY and QUEEN ELIZABETH. A number of Cunard's other ships had been sunk during World War II, but the MAURETANIA, QUEEN MARY and QUEEN ELIZABETH were all new before the war and had made it through unscathed, and the MEDIA and PARTHIA were new in 1947. The booklet is full of black and white photographs of first class staterooms and public rooms on these ships, and the text emphasizes not just their luxury but their "lavish modernity." The cover, meanwhile, connects to the past, with an image of an Egyptian bas-relief ship scene on the front and a paragraph about Cunard's British traditions on the back.
