Abstract

A Tourist class passenger list from the QUEEN MARY's August 18, 1937 voyage from Southampton to New York. The cardstock cover has a shiny silver plaque with an image of the ship, and there is a color painting of ii on the interior. The captain, J.C. Townley, and other officers are then listed. Among the passengers was Columbia University professor and father of American anthropology Franz Boas. He was returning from the July 1937 World Congress on Populations, a scientific conference on race. Although he was elderly at this time, Boas had travel led to Europe specifically to attend and to denounce the Nazi racist agenda propounded by German scholars attending the conference. Another passenger was Bishop S.L. Greene, an African American clergyman who had travel led to England and Scotland to represent the African Methodist Episcopal Church at two international conferences. Another passenger was Dr. Mary F. Brew, a physician at Binghamton State Hospital. Following the passenger list is detailed information for passengers. Most of the information is only in English, but two paragraphs are translated into French and German as well-- one inviting passengers to advise the kitchen about any dietary preferences, and another indicating that stewards will be wearing badges to indicate the non-English languages they speak.
