Biography of Benjamin F. Noyes
Benjamin F. Noyes (1828-1879) was a shipmaster from Mystic, Connecticut. During the period covered in this collection, Noyes was master of the brigs J.G. ANDERSON, BELLE OF THE BAY, and GENERAL BAILEY, and the schooner CHARMER of Stonington, Connecticut. Captain Noyes was also, along with Charles P. Williams of Stonington, a major shareholder in the CHARMER, and was the schooner's first master, sailing her in the coasting trade from the time she was built at Noank, Connecticut, in 1872 until his death at Savannah, George, in 1879.

Arrangement of the Collection
Since most of the items in this collection concern specific vessels, the collection was organized primarily by vessel name. Consequently the researcher will find all items made out to the brigs J.G. ANDERSON, BELLE OF THE BAY, and GENERAL BAILEY, and to the schooner CHARMER, arranged by month and year, and grouped under that vessel's name. A limited amount of material could not be accurately associated with any particular vessel, and some items were the product of Capt. Noyes's personal expenses. All correspondence in this collection is arranged chronologically by day, month, and year. Present also are 2 logbooks of the brig GENERAL BAILEY, and 3 logs and 1 account book for the schooner CHARMER.
