Biography of Oscar Fitzalon Stanton
Oscar F. Stanton (1834–1924) entered the U.S. Navy in 1849. He soon served aboard the SUSQUEHANNA as part of Commodore Perry’s expedition to Japan. From 1858 to 1859, he was assigned to the frigate CONSTELLATION. At the start of the Civil War, he was serving with the Pacific Squadron and was promoted to lieutenant commander. He later commanded the PINOLA and participated in the Battle of Mobile Bay under Admiral Farragut.
Stanton was promoted to commander in 1867 and to captain in 1879. He commanded the frigate CONSTITUTION for two years, and in 1884 took command of the TENNESSEE. The following year he was appointed to lead the Naval Station at New London, where he served for three years and developed a lasting connection to the town.
In 1893, he was promoted to rear admiral and placed in command of the South Atlantic Squadron. His flagship, the KEARSARGE, was wrecked in the Gulf of Mexico in 1894. He retired later that year but returned to active duty during the Spanish–American War to again command the New London Naval Station. This was his final naval appointment.
