Abstract
The Hiram A. Balch Collection contains approximately 5,000 pieces of manuscript material relative primarily to Hiram A. Balch, a merchant, lumber dealer, and shipowner from Trescott, Maine. Although the inclusive dates for this collection are 1792-1893, the material is concentrated between the years 1830-1860. Items relative to other members of the Balch family are also included. The names of John Blach, Charles Balch, Horatio Balch, Laffayette Balch, and Susan Balch appear in random fashion throughout the papers. The collection is primarily a record of Hiram A. Balch's business activities, although some letters, bills, receipts, and other documents detail more domestic matters. The collection contains correspondence (primarily incoming to H.A. Blach); agreements for cutting and shipping lumber; receipts for surveys of lumber; deeds and other documents relative to the purchase of land; accounts, bills, receipts, etc., relative to Hiram A. Balch as Collector, and Treasurer of Trescott, Maine; and general business (with some domestic) bills, receipts, promissory notes, accounts, correspondence, and agreements. The collection is housed in 13 boxes. Boxes 1 through 5 contains the general business papers (excluding correspondence) of Hiram A. Balch and others. Biography of Hiram A. Balch
Hiram A. Balch was evidently a merchant/businessman in Trescott, Maine. Evidence indicates that he may have dealt in general merchandise, foodstuff, and supplies, along with major trade in lumber. Numerous papers covering the cutting, surveying, shipment, and sale of lumber are present throughout the collection. Balch traded extensively with merchants in the Boston/Portland area. As his business grew Balch chartered, and eventually owned, several vessels (primarily schooners) which carried his lumber and other goods. He owned, and perhaps may have built, the schooners AUGUSTUS, BENJAMIN, PERU, SUSAN STURGES, and the brig HANNAH BALCH, during the 1840's-1850's. Between 1828-1844 Hiram Balch was active in Trescott's civic affairs, first as a Collector for highway taxes, and later as Town Tresurer. He was also certified as a Justice of the Peace in 1842. The Balch family was well represented in Trescott and in neighboring Lubec. Items relative to Charles Balch, John Balch, Lafayette Balch, Horatio Balch, and Susan Balch, among others, are included in this collection.
