The collection contains business correspondence, bills, accounts, receipts, and other papers, relating to the management of whaling vessels. Included also are records of outfitting costs and disbursal of whale oil from the whaling barks CAROLINE, OREGON, and KANAWHA.

Biography of Joseph H. Skillman
Joseph H. Skillman was a whaling agent in Greenport, New York, during the mid-19th century. He was a partner in the firm of Ireland and Skillman, which managed among others the whaling barks CAROLINE, OREGON, and KANAWHA.
