Biography of William John Henry Pollard
William John Henry Pollard was the son of a Stoningon ship master, William Pollard. He was born in May 1824, and when the Ocean Bank of Stonington was incorporated in 1851, with Charles P. Williams as President, Pollard was appointed cashier. He served in this position until 1882 and then succeeded Mr. Stiles Stanton to the presidency of the institution, by that time known as the First National Bank of Stonington, and held that office until his death on February 24, 1897. In addition Mr. Pollard was the Stonington town treasurer for 20 years, and had also been a trustee of the Stonington Savings Bank. Primarily as the result of his banking experience and position, Pollard became the manager of several estates, the most notable being that of Mr. Charles P. William (see collection 86). In his later years he also invested in railroads and real estate in the mid-west.
