Biography of the Drummond Family

The name, Drummond, appears in the earliest records of the Sagadohoc/Georgetown/Long Reach Settlement on the Kennebec River. Georgetown, which was incorporated in 1716, included the present-day towns of Bath, West Bath, Phippsurg, Winnegance, Woolwich, Georgetown and Arrowic, Maine. In the 1736 list of grantees dealing with the construction of the Georgetown Meeting House appears the names of Patrick and James Drummond, "Names famous in Bath wood shipbuilding a century and a half later." Patrick Drummond was one of the first selectmen of the town. In 1802 a Patrick Drummond built the schooner, GEORGETOWN in Georgetown, then a part of Greater Bath.

Members of the Drummond Family mentioned in these papers are: Patrick and John, each of whom were masters of the GEORGETOWN (Alexander Drummond & Co. was a half owner of the schooner); Alexander, Jr., who was master of the ship LEANDER of Wiscasset; Rutherford; and Leander. From the papers relating to the sawmill, it can be ascertained that John and Alexander were brothers, but their relationship to the other Drummonds cited is unclear. However, the Drummond Family continued to figure in the building of wooden ships on the Kennebec River until 1867.
