History of Daniel Trowbridge & Company
Daniel Trowbridge & Company was a New Haven, Connecticut shipping merchant during the 1860s-1880s. Daniel Trowbridge switched from clothing retailer to become a West Indian trader in 1859. His first vessel was the brig DANIEL TROWBRIDGE followed by the brigs GEM, PEARL, RUBY, GARNET and CAMEO. The GEM was built for Trowbridge in New Haven in 1868, made 100 voyages to the West Indies during the 17 years after her launch. The brigantine traded food stuff, mules, and other goods to the West Indies (including Martinique and Trinidad) for sugar, molasses, and other goods.
