Scope and Contents

The Fred Plaisted Papers consist of scapbook pages, clippings, and photographs on the career of champion rower Fred Plaisted (1849-1946). While some of the items date to the earlier part of Plaisted’s career, the bulk date from the 1920s – 1940s. The original scrapbook is contained in the collection, but its pages have been torn out. The removed pages are housed in the folders that follow that of the scrapbook.

Biographical / Historical

Fred Plaisted (1849-1943) rowed professionally from 1866 until he was in his 80s. He competed throughout the U.S. northeast and in China, winning various championships. He later coached the rowing teams at Bowdoin College, Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University, the Clifton Boat Club, and the Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club. When he was not rowing or coaching, he operated a boatbuilding business in Philadelphia.
