Abstract

This is a collection of correspondence, inventories, deeds, survey reports, crew lists, instruction booklets, work lists, accounts, bills, receipts, ship's papers, and blueprints, relating to the JOSEPH CONRAD and its operation. The collection also includes rough and smooth logs, engine logs, machinery logs, journals, order books, and rules and regulations for training sailing students aboard the U.S.M.S. Training Ship JOSEPH CONRAD, as well as a memorandum of agreement (1934 June 14) between and Danish Board of Trade (Handelsradet) and Capt. Alan J. Villiers to purchase the GEORG STAGE. Topics include the ship's circumnavigation of the globe under the command of Capt. Villiers, 1934-1936, and its use as a feature exhibit at Mystic Seaport Museum.

History of the Ship JOSEPH CONRAD

The ship JOSEPH CONRAD was built at Copenhagen, Denmark, as the GEORG STAGE, as sail training ship for Danish merchant service cadets in 1882. The vessel was sold in 1934 and renamed the JOSEPH CONRAD. The ship has been located at Mystic Seaport Museum since 1947.
