Records of the Holmes' Shipyard

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-Coll-046

Abstract

The collection consists of accounts, bills, receipts, documents, and correspondence relative to the shipbuilding and management activities of Josiah, Josiah Jr., and Jonathan Holmes. The papers are concentrated between 1840-1878, and represent a rather thorough record of the Holmes shipyard during those years. Items of singular interest include a large collection of marine insurance policies, shipping articles, shipbuilding agreements, bills of sale, and cargo storage diagrams. Records relative to the construction and operation of the brig/bark ANNAWAN, bark OSCAR, bark UNION, and 30 other vessels are also present and arranged by vessel name. Among the 33 volumes are shipyard account books and ledgers, workmen's "time books", payroll records, and receipt books. In all the Records of the Holmes' Shipyard incorporate a unique blend of subject matter covering shipbuilding, shipping, and whaling activity.

Biography of Josiah Holmes

Josiah Holmes (1179-1859) was a shipbuilder from Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. His first vessel was probably the sloop GALEN, built in 1814. Between the years 1816 and 1823 Holmes was in partnership with Benjamin Barstow, and together "Barstow and Holmes" built several ships and sloops. In 1825 Josiah Holmes was once again building vessels on his own, and he continued until 1841, when his son's Josiah Jr., and Jonathan joined the business, now called "Josiah Holmes & Son". By 1846 Josiah Holmes Sr. had retired and the yard continued under the supervision of his sons, the name now being changed to "Josiah Holmes Jr. & Brother." Between 1846 and 1867 the yard launched approximately 17 vessels, but soon after the Civil War Josiah Jr. moved to New Bedford and started the Holmes Coal Co. Jonathan Holmes remained in Mattapoisett and built a schooner and four whalers, the last being the whaling bark WANDERER in 1878. In addition to their shipbuilding activity, the Holmes' also held shares in other whaling vessels. For example J. Holmes Jr. & Bro. were agents for the whaling barks ANNAWAN (1854-1862) and OSCAR (1854-1861). Jonathan Holmes was also a shipmaster. The Josiah Holmes Jr. & Bro. firm was well known, and was popular with the Quaker whaling agents of New Bedford, since Josiah Jr. was of that faith.
