Biography of Ralph E. Barry

Ralph Ensworth (R. E.) Barry, 1868-1947, was a naval architect, steamship master, steamship engineer, and marine engineer. He was educated at the Stevens Institute of Technology and Cornell University.

He had been employed in various shipyards, including the Union Iron Works, San Francisco, California; the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Virginia; the League Island Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the design branch of the Bureau of Construction and Repair, Navy Department, Washington, D. C. In the 1920’s he was self-employed as a naval architect in New London, Connecticut, where he designed yachts and commercial craft for steam and diesel power.

He also designed yachts in full square and fore-and-aft rig.
