3,546 (+) sheets, representing 1,390 designs; 47 gore books.In 1901, Thomas White Ratsey, of the sailmaking firm Ratsey & Lapthorn of Cowes, Isle of Wight, England, sent his nephew, George Ernest Ratsey, to establish an American counterpart to the business. George (1876?-1943) set up shop at City Island, New York, where his sons, George Colin (1907?-1984) and Ernest Ratsey (-1974), also joined the family firm. This collection is composed of the bound gore books and sail plans drawn and collected, dating from circa 1902 to 1960. This material is from the sailmaking business at Ratsey & Lapthorn, Inc., City Island, New York. It is likely that Ratsey & Lapthorn acquired the gore books of sailmaker S. Cornhill, whose drawings cover the time period of 1902 through circa 1930. The designs of prominent naval architects and the sail plans for all types of large and small yachts are among the thousands of drawings included within this collection.
