Kochiss-Upson Collection
Dates
- Creation: 1883 - 1959
Biographical / Historical
This collection is composed of material from the personal collection of John M. (Jack) Kochiss. Mr. Kochiss found some of the plans in the attic of the F. F. Upson Sailmaking Company, which was established by Frank F. Upson in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1854. The firm was taken over by Cunningham in 1947 and remained in business until 1952 as the firm of Cunningham & Upson. These plans mainly represent working schooners and also smaller working watercraft used in the Long Island oyster industry. The dated drawings range from 1883 to 1957. Mr. Kochiss used this reference material while researching his book "Oystering From New York to Boston" (1974). This collection also contains plans created from measurements of four half models, which were drawn in 1958 and 1959.
