Biographical / Historical

The Seawanhaka Corinthian yacht club was founded in 1871, at Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. In 1879 the club added to its sailing regulations the stipulation that each yacht winning a prize in a club-sponsored regatta would deposit a copy of that yacht's lines with the club secretary. These lines were to be taken off the vessel and drawn up by the official measurer of the club or approved and certified by the measurer. If the plans were drawn by the measurer, they were to be one-half inch to the foot for yachts 80 feet or less and three-eighths of an inch to the foot for yachts over 80 feet. The plans in this collection, gathered by the club, are all for vessels that belonged to members. Some plans may represent the work of John Hyslop, an amateur designer who became measurer for the club in 1883. The dates on these plans range from 1891 to 1951, while the plans represent vessels built between 1857 and 1959. These plans are restricted, for reference use only.
