Registers of Seamen's Protection Certificates

 Collection
Identifier: other-09

Scope and Contents

No copies of original certificates are available—the originals were kept by the seamen to whom they were issued. This information is taken from registers (lists) kept by the customs districts.

The Registers of Seamen's Protection Certificates database contains 30,987 transcribed entries dating from 1796 to 1878. The records document certificates issued through the customs districts of Fall River, Gloucester, Marblehead, New Haven, New London, Newport, and Salem. Entries may identify the seaman's name, age, birthplace, certificate number, date of issue, complexion, height, hair and eye color, citizenship, distinguishing marks, and register image number. The amount of information recorded varies by person and customs district.

Biographical / Historical

The Act of May 28, 1796, provided for certificates intended to establish an American seaman's citizenship and protect against impressment. Seamen generally retained the certificates themselves. Customs collectors maintained registers recording the certificates they issued, and the information represented in this database was transcribed from those registers.

Arrangement

The records are arranged in series by customs district. Within each series, entries are arranged alphabetically by surname and then by first name. Entries with identical names are ordered by age at issue. One entry for which no customs district was supplied is grouped in a final unidentified-district series.

Existence and Location of Originals

The original customs-district registers are held by the National Archives at Boston in Waltham, Massachusetts. Copies of pages from the New London protection register are available at the G.W. Blunt White Library, Mystic Seaport Museum, Inc.
