First day cover, autographed by TITANIC survivor Edith Haisman, 2 April 1996
Abstract
A first day cover postcard with, on the front, a painting of the TITANIC's lifeboats heading towards the CARPATHIA. Above the ship, it has been autographed by TITANIC survivor Edith Haisman. On the back is a $2 stamp issued by the Bahamas in honor of a centenary of Marconi radio communications, with images of both the TITANIC and the CARPATHIA. The postmark says "Bahamas 2-4-96 First Day of Issue" and "100 years of radio communications." To the left is a certification that this is #43 of 1000 covers issued. The caption at the bottom explains that the painting is by Stuart Williamson and dates to 1995. All these elements are part of the same story-- the still new Marconi wireless telegraph on the TITANIC was used to call for help as the ship was sinking, and it was thanks to that distress signal that the CARPATHIA steamed at full speed to the disaster site and picked up the TITANIC survivors in lifeboats. Among those survivors was 15 year old Edith Haisman, who with her mother was rescued by the CARPATHIA, although her father died. A few months after this card was issued, in August 1996, she traveled to the site of the TITANIC wreck, at the age of 99.
