History of the Last Voyage of the Bark SEA QUEEN
The SEA QUEEN was built in 1856 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, for use in the whaling industry. On her final voyage, she departed New Bedford in April 1884 for the South Atlantic. By October of that year, ten crew members had deserted, with an additional sixteen leaving the vessel over the following year. In February 1886, the ship lost her windlass during a storm off the coast of Cape Town.
In July 1888, the SEA QUEEN was surveyed, condemned, and sold at Port Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles. The officers and crew were housed at the Sailors' Home, where the Reverend helped them petition the vessel’s owner, John McCullock for their portion of the 1,780 barrels of oil obtained during the voyage.
Captain Thompson returned to the United States, arriving in October 1888.
