Biography of the Tate Family
William Tate (d. 1877) was the son of William and Hannah Tate, but nothing can be found in these papers about the family before 1821. William Tate was described as a merchant tailor, but he also owned and managed several vessels in the period from 1833 to 1850, including the bark FAME, which was involved in a case of barratry when the second mate took her on a voyage to south east Africa to get slaves for Brazil. William also owned several pieces of land in New London, and was a member of the Second Congregational Society.
Isaac C. Tate (d. 1894), his son, was President of the New London Horse Shoe Nail Company, which was formed in 1859, reached its peak during the Civil War, and went out of business in 1879. Isaac managed much of his sisters' and mother's affairs, invested in land and railroads, and generally assumed leadership in a growing family of nieces and nephews. He was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church, and the Thames Club, and in later years was supervisor of the Union School District #3.
