Abstract

Papers, logbooks, and account books kept by Enoch Wood on board the ships GEORGE, NORMAN, MOGUL, CHATHAM, CHARIOT, GEORGE CABOT, and ALABAMA, as well as the brig KREMLIN. Vessels were involved in the coastal United States and transatlantic trade, carrying various cargoes primarily between the ports of Boston, New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston, Havre, Calcutta, and Liverpool. The collection also includes oversize file material and horizontal file material such as shipping papers for the ALABAMA, a 1757 map of the solar system, accounts and port bills, and a ship manifest for the ALABAMA.

Biography of Enoch Wood

Enoch Wood was a Massachusetts ship master. Born in Boxford, Massachusetts on 1797 Jan 20, he sailed aboard and commanded vessels engaged in the coastal and transatlantic trades between 1822 and 1845. Vessels included the ships GEORGE, built in 1814 in Salem, Massachusetts; the MOGUL, built in 1823 in Medford, Massachusetts by Thatcher Magoun; the CHATHAM, built in 1834 in Medford, Massachusetts by S. Lapham; the NORMAN, built in 1836 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire; the CHARIOT, GEORGE CABOT, and ALABAMA; as well as the Brig KREMLIN, built in 1824 in Dover, Massachusetts. Like other ship masters of his time Enoch Wood was often part owner of the vessels he commanded. He is listed as part owner of both the NORMAN and the ALABAMA. Wood died on 1882 Nov 29.
