Abstract

This collection consists of volumes of diaries kept by Gerald W. Medderd before and during an around-the-world cruise with Ray Kauffman, a long time friend and owner of the ketch HURRICANE. It also contains photocopies of letters written to the family before and during the voyage, customs and consular documents, and a biographical sketch of Ray Kauffman.

Abstract The Hiram C. Holmes is housed in ten document boxes. The first five boxes contain general business bills, accounts, receipts, and other documents, chronologically arranged by month and year. Boxes 6-8 contain all the correspondence, mostly incoming, found in the collection. Arranged chronologically by day, month, and year, it has also been further organized into letters from the three companies Holmes did most of his business; papers concerning efforts to patent an improvement in gear axle...

Abstract

Chiefly personal, business, and family letters (1849-1877) to Harden. Also includes ship-related bills, accounts, receipts, consular certificates, and general clearances. Topics include Harden's activities as a commander of coasting vessels; his transportation of a locomotive to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; maritime trade; and cargoes, generally lumber. Correspondents include shipowners who engaged Harden as a captain, fellow shipmasters, and business owners.
