Passenger Ship Ephemera Collection

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-Coll-283

Scope and Content

Researchers have long disputed the definition of "passenger ship". Definitions range anywhere between a ship with minimum cabin accommodations for twelve, to one accommodating fifty passengers; and from minimum gross tonnage of 2,500, to 6,000 tons. The original purpose of these vessels varied greatly. Many were originally cargo ships, and others were built to carry emigrants. Some were constructed specifically to be passenger cruise ships. As passenger ships, some only carried passengers seasonally, when not carrying cargo, for instance. Many of these vessels changed names and/or companies throughout their lifetimes. Some companies or passenger lines themselves were bought out and therefore took on new names.

Abstract

Postcards, brochures, menus, time-tables, tickets and other ephemeral material collected by Mystic Seaport, relating to vessels that carried passengers, even if that vessel had other primary functions.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged in three series, one organized by vessel name, and the second by cruise line depending on whether the information is about a specific vessel or about a corporate cruise line. In each of these series the items are further arranged alphabetically. The third series is comprised of postcards that relate to steamships, but have no apparent connection to a particular vessel or liner. These have been arranged alphabetically by geographic region.
