Abstract

The collection has been organized chronologically including letters from Hobart regarding the disposition of vessels and cargo; miscellaneous accounts, receipts, and business agreements; instructions to shipmasters; copies of cargo invoices; accounts of cargo sales; and expenses for construction, repair, and outfitting of various vessels. The papers also covey Hobart's difficulties in the West Indies trade during the French and Indian War (1754-1763.)

Abstract The collection is contained primarily bills and receipts, etc., for expenses relative to the vessel's maintenance and the transportation of cargo. Typical expense include bills for towing, wharfage, trimming cargo, fumigating ship, and loading and unloading cargo. Pilot fees and bridge charges are also present, along with numerous other vessel accounts. A limited number of letters can be found in this collection, usually between L. C. Abstract

This collection contains business and personal papers, scrapbooks, clippings, and an unfinished biography of Sargent by his son, Redford Ames Sargent. Included is a journal kept by Redford Ames Sargent aboard the ship THOMAS DANA of Boston during a voyage 1888-1889.
